TV GUIDE - SATURDAY, 18 MAY, 2009

SBS 8.30 Iron Chef (WS.S) Japanese Cooking show in which a world renowned chef and his challenger have one hour to concoct a banquet based on a single ingredient (Japan). I admire anyone’s resolution to create a meal including all five food groups from just one ingredient but not sure I’m convinced about the implied taxonomy of food categories on this show.  And who decided what foods complement each other and which foods are more important that others?  The vegetables are presented with no glamor, just necessity.  Sure they try to dress them up but underneath we know that they’re just really saying ‘this is the food we had to have’.  I definitely think ‘The A Sunny Hill Facing North Tribune’ is in order in this imagined community.

Also at 8.30 on Chanel ten is a movie, Alien 3 (M, VL.92, WS, S) After being put into an extended sleep state after the alien, Ellen Ripley’s spacecraft crashes into a planet used as a maximum security prison.  Sigourney Weaver, Charles S. Dutton, Charles Dance, Paul McGann, Brian Glover.  This movie sounds like upsy-down-town when the rabbits are in the trees where the birds should be.  I’d rather attend a week long workshop on the ins and outs of the double helix and dna atomic and molecular structure.

Alternatively, there’s Wolf Creek on Channel Nine (Not Advised).  Cast Away on 7 but everybody’s seen that and it’s so long, and most people are already frightened of the dentist.  ABC - OMG The Bill again!

Little Britain at 9 on 7 is recommended.  I love you more than rainbows and unicorns…

Disclaimer: Pursuant to the last instalment of wotsonthebox, suggestions were made regarding the utility of providing a Saturday tv viewing guide with incorrect date and having post-temporal tendencies. I think this is missing the point! Wotsonthebox really is a challenge to the viewer to ‘look outside the box’. To these critics I say be gone with your wearisome ways and critical negativity,  nonetheless, I’m absolutely open to any comments and recommendations for improvements. That said, I don’t want to appear unapproachable or seem to be reprimanding viewers because this is a fun space!!!

So sometimes there will be a guide for Saturday evening viewing and sometimes there will not be, and sometimes the guide may come out after the shows have been screened but I am sure that viewers will understand that this makes little difference to the whole experience of appreciating and enjoying wotsonthebox!

sbs one 7.30pm Mythbusters: Young Scientist Special. (WS, CC) Series return.  Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman are joined by four finalists from the 2007 Discovery Education/3M Young Scientist Challenge.  Savage attempts to embed notions of science and metanarrative in youngsters, this should have ethical implications.  Previous attempts with experiments with diet coke and mentos wanting on this episode, tonight’s viewing focuses on ‘Discovery Education’.  I wonder what they discovered about education, possibly that it’s propaganda sent by the government to make us all think that we are discovering stuff and creating shit.  And why four finalists, a binary and two categories, please, enough with the sub-conscious logic paradigm.  And what’s so scientific about sticky tape and post-it-notes with Scottish looking tartan on the packaging?  I’d rather be sitting on an ‘Awesome’ toilet seat cover, it may not cure cancer but at least it stops us having to put up with shit.  A definite possibility that somebody at sbs has been sniffing glue!

Channel 10 8.30 MOVIE: What Lies Beneath. (M, Ivh, 00, WS, R, C) A scientist’s wife investigates odd happenings at their luxury lakeside home.  Harrison Ford, Michelle Pfeiffer, Diana Scarwid, Miranda Otto.  This movie heads away from the idea of indoctrinating young innocent children and instead attempts to tackle the issue of science rather coupled with gender inequality and gender stereo types.  What lies beneath this movie is a transparent attempt to disgrace any conscious person’s ability to reason neo-liberal discourse and the ethics involved with associating women with ‘odd things’ and men with very sensible ‘science things’.  The only odd happenings here is that Harrison Ford is hanging out with three women which perhaps raises the question rather of ‘who’ lies beneath!

I would recommend channel 7, 4am, Danoz Direct.

For anyone interested in Saturday, 20 June, here’s a repeat of the guide.

tv guide - Saturday, 20 June, 2009

8.30pm sbs The Squiz. (PG. WS. CC) Sports quiz show in which two teams – captained by comedians Amelia Jane Hunter and Jordan Raskopoulos – vie for the coveted Squiz Champion Trophy. 1084894, This is a great outlet for people who love sport but can’t do it. 7.30pm ten Football (WS, CC) AFL. Round 12. Sydney v Collingwood. From ANZ Stadium. Sydney. 83162407. This is a filler for the Sharks vs Tigers round of the NRL as the Cronulla team has been involved in another mishap with Zoe and group s_ x romp, I can’t write the word as it would be inappropriate in a tv guide!

7.30pm on nine is MOVIE: In Good Company (PG, als, 04, R, WS, HD, CC) A middle-aged executive finds himself working for a much younger boss after a corporate takeover, and to complicate matters discovers the man is also dating his daughter. Dennis Quaid, Scarlett Johansson. (Includes Lotto Draw) 224594. Very complex relations going on here, was getting a bit confused typing it up, he said, she said. This movie definitely challenges many boundaries on so many levels.  It confronts issues such as child labour and carnal knowledge in a sensitive yet thought provoking way.  Lotto is a very welcome relief, statistics, probability, coloured balls definately providing a moment for light reflection after the intense and complex nature of this movie.  Not sure if the numbers after lotto draw listed in the guide are the winning numbers?! Something to definitely consider!

7.30pm seven Rugby Union. (WS, CC) Bundaberg Rum Series. Game 3. Wallabies v Italy. From Etihad Stadium, Melbourne. Commentary from Gordon Bray. Tim Horan and Dan Crowley. 4964943 Anaphylactic shock would be a welcome relief on this one, I’d rather be breast feeding a baby in parliament. 8.30pm abc1 OMG The Bill again, I would recommend abc2 with Dora the Explorer.
